Volunteer Obligations
Below you will find a list of the volunteer jobs that will need filled to make each swim meet run smoothly for our swimmers! Each family is required to volunteer for at least THREE (3) shifts during the season. Failure to meet this requirement by the end of the Championship meet will result in a $50 fine. We all need to work together to make this a wonderful experience for our kids! Thank you in advance for your support!
Timers: stand at the end of the pool with a stopwatch and time the swimmer in your lane. This job is broken into halves and usually goes from event 1-32 then 33-70 or however many events are planned. Twelve timers will need to sign up for each meet. You stay in the same lane for the entire half. A volunteer parent from the opposing team is also in the lane with a stopwatch with you. One of you will write the times on the papers on the clipboard. (Home and Away meets, one half)
Head Timer: stands at the end of the timers with 2 stopwatches. Starts both when the event starts. If someone’s timer malfunctions, they will flag you down and you will take your timer to them while it is still running for them to use. They will give you their timer. (Home meets only, one half)
Runner: wait at the end of the timers, and when the event is finished, you will collect the papers from each lane and “run” them to the computer person inputting results. (Home meets only, one half)
Recorder/Computer: you will sit at a table with a laptop and input results into the system. A computer volunteer from the opposite team will be helping you. (Home meets, entire meet)
Assistant Recorder/Computer: you will help the recorder by reading results aloud so they may type them into the system quickly. (Home and away meets, entire meet)
Concessions: Since we are having our meets in the FMAC pool next to our practice pool, we get to use the enclosed concession stand on that pool deck. You will be responsible for setting up the provided foods and drinks, collecting cash, counting the cash at the end of the meet, running the stand, and cleaning up/organizing the goods at the end of the meet. (Home meets only, one half)
Refreshment runner: you will take provided bottles of water to all volunteers usually at event 15 and event 40. (Home meets only, entire meet since it’s only about a 10 min job)
Swimmer and Volunteer Check-In: you will stand at the door with the clipboard and a printed list of volunteers and swimmers attending the meet to check them in. You will turn the attendance sheets in to the clerk of course team when finished so changes can be made if needed. (Home and away meets)
Announcer: you will use the megaphone and starting equipment to announce the event/heat, ask the timers if they are ready, tell the swimmers to step on the blocks, and start the race. We will show you how to use the equipment. This job is for someone who can speak clearly and is confident to keep the meet running smoothly. (Home meets only, entire meet preferred)
Stroke and turn judges: you will sit at one of the ends of the pool in a chair and make sure the swimmers are touching the wall with both hands for butterfly & breast stroke, and touching the wall with at least one hand for freestyle and back stroke. You will monitor if swimmers are swimming the correct stroke. You will monitor flip turns for the older swimmers. You will be sitting with a volunteer from the opposite team. (Home and away meets, one half)
Fill-In: you will be on standby to help out in any position needed in case someone does not show up, has to leave or step away for a moment, or we need extra help. (Home and away meets, one half/entire meet depending on job needed)
Heat ribbons: you will hand out a heat ribbon to the winner of each heat for swimmers 10 and under only. Relay events do not receive heat ribbons. (Home meets only, one half)
Parent monitors: you will stand in the swimmers area and monitor behavior for 12 & under. You will help answer the little one’s questions, make sure they stay seated in their age group area, and make sure they are not leaving the area unless they ask permission first. (Home and away meets, one half)
Clerk of Course Head: leads the Clerk of Course Team and takes the swimmers to the blocks and lines them up in their correct lane and heat. This job is for someone who has been trained by the Clerk of Course Team and has volunteered on the Clerk of Course team at least 3 times. (Home and away meets, entire meet)
Clerk of Course Team: this group of volunteers uses the heat sheets to call swimmers, line them up by event and heat, and support the clerk of course head as needed. This job is fast paced and requires organization. We will be happy to train you! (Home and away meets, one half or entire meet)
